Lesson 5
Before It’s Too Late
Talk and Practice
A
A: Can I throw away these old clothes in this waste bag?
B: Actually, I’d rather you didn’t throw them away there.
A: On, then, would you please tell me what I should do with them?
B: Well... we always take our old clothes to the old clothes store.
A: Um... Where’s that?
B: It’s just at the end of the road. Across from the supermarket.
B
A: Dad, can you give me a ride to school?
B: I’m sorry, Su-mi. I’m taking the bus today.
Our company is holding a Green Campaign now.
A: Oh, I see.
B: So you should walk to school.
A: All right, I will. You always say I need more exercise.
Read and Think
Before It’s Too late
Our world is in danger. It is very important that we do something to save the Earth. First of all, what are the dangers to our world? Second, what can we do to help save the Earth?
The Earth is in Danger
Many disasters have done terrible damage to the Earth. Oceans and beaches have been covered with huge oil spills, and serious air pollution has been killing people and animals.
We share this planet with many other forms of life, and depend on them for important things such as food and shelter. In fact, all animals and plants depend on each other to live. The way plants and animals depend on each other in a place is called an ecosystem. If one part of an ecosystem is damaged, it hurts all the other parts of the ecosystem.
How Can We Save the Earth?
People have now begun to realize that pollution, war, oil spills, nuclear accidents, and the careless throwing-away of waste, have all had serious effects on animal, plant, and human life. But it is not too late to stop this problem.
Here are some things you can do to help. Although some of these actions we can take may seem small, if everyone did these things, it would make a big difference.
Don’t leave lights turned on when you aren’t using them. If you are the last person to leave a room, turn the lights off. It’s a matter of habit. You can start it right now.
Don’t waste water. Heating water uses a lot of energy. Take shorter showers. Taking shorter showers can cut the use of water and energy in half!
The biggest use of home energy is for heating and cooling homes. So, make sure the heat isn’t turned up too high in the winter. In the summer, instead of using the air-conditioner, open the window or turn down the air-conditioning.
Use a towel to dry your hair instead of a hair-drier. It’s a good way to save energy.
Every time you go shopping, take your own cloth bag to the supermarket instead of bringing back a new plastic bag.
Don’t buy things that come in lots of wrapping. Packaging uses energy to produce. Buy unwrapped things, if you can.
Help cut down on trash by recycling paper, bottles, cans, and plastic.
What else can we do to save energy? Use a bike or walk when traveling a short way. Don’t ask your parents for a ride to school.
It’s the best way for you to save energy right now.
