The concept of the Haeundae Udong project is to build a powerful and unique icon expressed in a dynamic volume on the Busan waterfront. The buildings are sculpted to express the dramatic beauty and power of the ocean. The curvilinear geometry of the buildings signify the grace and force ocean waves, the unique composition of the petals of a flower, wind-filled sails of ships on the water and the subtle, elegant curves in traditional Korean temple and housing architecture.

Sculptural in form, the Haeundae Udong development creates a new icon for the city of Busan. The buildings radiate a new spirit for condominium living with a vibrant mixed-use development. The space which the buildings create both inside and outside enhances the life of its inhabitants. The sculpted forms of the composition, read against the city of Busan, create an iconic whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

The Haeundae Udong project celebrates those who live in it and offers many exciting perspectives for those who will see this dynamic building and the exciting city context it creates. The development becomes a spatial entity that is beautiful from the multiple vistas from inside and out. The apartments take advantage of the site by maximizing the sweeping views of the ocean, the marina, the mountains, the Gwang-An bridge and the city of Busan.

To create the iconic image of the project it is important to create a skyline. Instead of simply extruding the building footprints, the heights are varied and the profiles tapered to create a sculptural composition on the horizon. This strategy not only gives the project and the city of Busan a unique, iconic image, it also helps to maximize the view corridors of all the apartments as well as bringing the most light possible into the developments beyond the site. Breaking down the mass makes the very large development seem more slender and elegant on the skyline. In addition, the varied, sculptural forms create unique and exciting spaces between the buildings that add interest and excitement to the entire development from inside and out.

The image is created not only from the shape of the individual buildings but by the placement of the buildings on the site. The design aims to take advantage of the shape of the site to provide the most desirable apartments with south west facing views along the edge of the site while creating a clear definition of public and private space.

The placement of the towers also allows for a generous park to be developed within the site. The towers will ring a beautifully landscaped park that will provide a spectacular open space for the residents as well as the visitors to the site and to the city of Busan. To maximize the park space and open feeling of the landscape, some of the non-residential program could be integrated into the landscape.

The development is composed of four residential towers, an office building, a hotel, convention center and sport facility. All of which are articulated in the specific architectural language developed for the site. The development as a whole must be a 21st Century space creates a new image for HDC and a new vision of residential living in Korea.
