<Topic 1> A Health Plan for In-ho's Family

My family is very busy every day. We have no chance to talk together.

My dad goes to work by car at seven. He usually comes home late in the evening. My mom has a toy shop and often feels tired at night. My brother, sister, and I study hard. Sometimes we play computer games together.

My family doesn't have any time to exercise together. I think we should start exercising. I will make an exercise plan for my family.

Inho and his family went to Gwangneung Forest by bus. The air was fresh and cool. Inho took deep breaths of fresh air. He enjoyed walking in the forest with his family.

In the forest, Inho saw a girl in a wheelchair. She was playing basketball with her brother. Inho went over to her and said, "Can I play with you? You look like a good player." The girl said, "Thank you." So Inho played with them for half an hour.

On the way home, Inho thought to himself, "She can't walk, but she has a sound mind. What about me?"

My dad is working in China. He has been away from home for one year. He calls us three times a week. I miss him a lot.

Last Saturday night, I was very sick and could not sleep well. My mom did not sleep all night, either. She took care of me. The next morning, my father called. He asked, "How are You? Are you having a good time at school?"I answered, "I'm fine, Dad. I know you're working hard there." Dad answered, "Well, son. You're talking like a man. I feel proud of you. May I speak to your mom?" I gave the phone to my mom. Tears rolled down my cheeks. I don't know why.

It was the evening of Eobeoinal. My sister and I gave a small party for them. We put candles in the middle of th table. We lit the candles and turned off the light. We ran to them and said together, "Thank you, Mom and Dad." I said, "This party is for you. We hope you like it." Then we gave a card to our parents. They said, "Thanks. You're our hopes and dreams!" We had a good time.

An old man lived in a small village. He worked hard on his farm. He had three sons and loved them very much.

The old man became sick and stayed in bad. one night he called his three sons together. The old man said, "I have written my last letter. Read it and follow my will."

The eldest son said, "Oh, no! You'll get better soon." The other sons said, "What shall we do, Dad?" The old man said, "I'm leaving my seventeen horses to all of you. Don't sell them."

Two days later the old man died.

The three sons opened the will.

To my three sons,

I leave my seventeen horses.

My eldest son shall take half.

My second son shall take a third.

<Topic 1> A Trip to Geumgangsan

Ted's family has been to Geumgangsan.

How did they make the trip from Seoul?

They went to Kimpo Airport by bus. They got on an airplane for Gangneung. They looked down at the beautiful mountains and rivers. one hour later, they arrived at Gangneung. They stayed at a small hotel by the sea.

The next morning, they went to Donghae by bus. Then they got on the biggest ship there. They enjoyed seeing the blue sea from the ship. They landed at a small port near Geumgangsan. Then they walked up Geumgangsan and enjoyed themselves.

July 30, ……

Dear Hana,

How are you? Last weekend, I went to Geumgangsan with my family. We went by ship to a port near the mountain. I have never been on a big ship like that. I was very excited.

I walked up Geumgangsan with my family. There were a lot of beautiful rocks. Some of them looked like bears. Wow! They were wonderful! I really enjoyed the beautiful mountains and the waterfalls. I took a lot of pitures there. I will send you some of them. Good-bye. Your friend, Ted

Jack was walking down to the toy shop. He saw an big dog near the toy shop. The dog looked big, like a lion. It watched Jack. Jack stopped walking. A woman was standing near the dog.

"Excuse me," Jack said. "Does your dog bite?"

"No," the woman said, "my dog doesn't bite."

Jack walked beside the dog. Suddenly the dog jumped up and bit Jack.

"Hey!" Jack said to the woman.

"You said your dog doesn't bite!".

"It doesn't," the woman said. "That's not my dog."

<Topic 2> Who Wins?

A little rabbit got lost in a forest. He went around the forest to look for something to eat. It got darker and darker. The rabbit felt very tired. He fell asleep under a tree.

A lion found the rabbit. The lion said,

"I will eat you right now. I'm very hungry."

A bear was passing by and said to the lion, "Don't touch that rabbit. It's mine! I found it before you."

"Oh, no! I found it first. It's mine," the lion said.

They began to fight over the rabbit. At last, they became tired. Then a fox came by and said, "Thanks, my good friends." The smart fox laughed at them. Then he went away with the rabbit.

There will be a school Expo next week. It's a big event at Sora's school every year. Hundreds of people can see their children's works at the Expo.

Sora is going to show her photo album. She has worked on it with her brother for a long time. Jane, her friend, has dozens of postcards from abroad. She will show them at this Expo. Minsu and Nuri have made a nice movie in their club. The name of the movie is "Clean Up Our World."

<Topic 2> Come to th Concert

The music concert is one of our school events. Some students will sing pop songs. A few students will sing folk songs. Hana will present pansori. I find pansori interesting.

Pansori is a kind of folk play. A pansori singer tells a story using songs. The singer sings, speaks and uses gestures. A drummer sits in front of the singer. The drummer often shouts, "good" or "nice". This makes the singer and the people excited. They find it fun and interesting.

Hana has learned pansori for three years. She will present a part of Chunhyangga. She will wear beautiful Korean clothes. She will sing songs with a fan in her hand. I am sure that she will do well.

I am a son of the sausage family. My father was born in Europe about three thousand years ago. I was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in the 17th century. So I was called a frankfurter.

I moved to America in the 1860s. I was called a dachshund sausage. I looked like a dachshund, A German dog. It has a long body and short legs.

Then I became popular at baseball games. In 1906, a newspaper cartoonist went to a baseball game. He heard my name, but could not write it. So the next day, he drew me in a cartoon. He wrote, "Get your hot dogs!" under the cartoon. So I was given a new name.

I will tell you its history.

I was born in Korea about thirteen hundred years ago. When I was young, I wore white and green clothes. At that time, I lived in a salty room. So I was called chimcheo.

A few hundred years later, I got a new name. Then I was called dimchae and jimchi. When I grew older, I wanted to be more beautiful.

Four hundred years ago, Korea had a war with Japan. After the war, red pepper came to Korea from abroad. Since then, I have often worn red clothes. I have always been good for your health. Who am I?

<Topic 1> Chuseok in Korea

I am Toto from another world.

Let me tell you a story about Korea.

When I was flying over Korea, it was "Chuseok". Chuseok is the Korean Thanksgiving Day.

In the morning, I could see Sora's family. They put nice food and new fruit on the table. They made a lot of songpyeon with new rice. After breakfast, they visited their family graves.

In the evening, they enjoyed looking at the full moon. Some people made a circle and danced hand in hand. They wee enjoying the holiday.

I'm Tori. Toto's friend.

Let me tell you a story about my short trip.

On the second Monday in October, I went to Canada. It was Thanksgiving Day. While I was over there, I saw many interesting things. In some cities, there were big holiday events. In other cities, there were big football matches.

I saw Bill's house. His family got together and enjoyed talking. Then his family enjoyed a big turkey dinner. They had a nice holiday.

A-Bees are some of the most useful insects to people. They make honey. Honey is made by worker bees. Field bees and house bees are called worker bees. Field bees get something sweet from flowers. When they collect it, they take it to the house bees. They work as a team and make honey together.

B-There are three kinds of bees. Most bees are small worker bees. There are also a few male bees. They are a little bigger than worker bees. The male bees don't work. The biggest bee is the queen. The queen stays at home and lays eggs. So the worker bees feed her.

A-Soccer is one of the most popular sports. The game is called football in Europe, Asia and South America. But in the United States and Canada, it is called soccer.

The game of soccer started in England in the 1850s. More and more people came to enjoy soccer. In 1908, it became an Olympic sport. Since then it has been popular in many countries.

B-The World Cup gives us fun and great excitement. It is played every four years. Many people all over the world watch the games on television.

The first World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930. At that time only thirteen teams played. Uruguay won the first World Cup. Since then it has become more and more popular. Today, it is one of the largest sports events.

I remember the first day at school. This picture was taken on that day. To me, It was the best day of the year. We were very happy when we met for the first time.

These pictures were taken with my friends. I have made a lot of friends. We had lots of fun together. Look at this picture. I got it from a computer. I can get other useful information from computers.

This picture was taken at the school Expo. We wanted to keep our city clean. We made a nice video tape. Many of my friends watched it. When they gave us a big hand, we were very happy.

Last Sunday, Tim went to the museum with Uram. In the hall of the museum, he saw a picture on the wall. It was a picture of a ship, but the ship looked very funny. It looked like a turtle! Tim was curious about this ship, so he asked Uram about it.

"It's funny. It looks like a turtle. Do you know anything about it?"

"Ah, that is a turtle ship," said Uram.

"A turtle ship? What is that?" asked Tim.

Uram explained, "It's a kind of battleship. one of our national heroes, Admiral Yi Sunsin, built it."

"Admiral Yi Sunsin? Who is he?" Tim's curiosity grew more and more.

"Ah! He is a great man in our history," said Uram. "With turtle ships, he protected our country against the Japanese invasion. We Koreans are very proud of him."

One day, a crow was flying across a road. She looked down and saw a crane. The crane was walking along gracefully.

"She looks really beautiful," thought the crow. "I hope I can walk gracefully like the crane." The crow flew down to the road and started walking behind the crane. The crow tried to copy the crane's wonderful walk.

The crane turned around. "What are you doing?" asked the crane.

"Don't be angry," replied the crow. "I'm just trying to learn to walk like you."

"Foolish bird!" said the crane. "You're a crow. Walk like crow!"

The crow didn't listen to the crane's advice. She kept trying to walk like a crane, but she never learned the crane's walk. She even forgot how to walk like a crow!

Lesson 8 Let's Enjoy the Full Moon

A: This Kimchi is very hot.

B: Don't you like Kimchi?

A: I am not sure. I think it is too hot for me.

   What is this?

B: It's gochujang. It's red pepper paste.

C: It is a little hot but very tasty.

After dinner, Nari's father said, "Today is Chuseok. It is a traditional Korean holiday to celebrate a good harvest."

"Yes, we have Thanksgiving," said Sally.

"We eat turkey for Thanksgiving. Are there any special foods for Chuseok?" asked Tim.

"Of course. We eat songpyeon. Why don't you try some?" said Nari's mother. They enjoyed the songpyeon.

Nari's father said, "At Chuseok, we Koreans visit our family graves. We also enjoy the full moon in the evening."

Sally said, "That's great. Can we go ut and enjoy the full moon now?"

"Sure. Let's go," said Nari.

Nari, Sally, and Tim went out and enjoyed the full moon.

Lesson 9 How Did Football Begin?

A: What kinds of sports do you like, Uram?

B: I like all kinds of sports, but I like football the best.

A: Do you mean soccer?

B: Right.

A: We have a different football game in America.

B: I know. It's American football.

A: How many players do you need to play soccer?

B: We need eleven players to make a team.

B: May I speak to Tim, please?

A: This is he.

B: Hi, Tim. This is Uram.

B: Would you like to join our football team?

A: Yes, I'd love to. When do you meet?

Boys, men, and even women play football everywhere. They play it at schools, in parks, and on quiet streets.

How did football begin? No one knows. Where did it start? Many people believe that it started in England hundreds of years ago. The men of one village tried to kick a ball to the middle of the other village. The men of the other village tried to do the same. They did it just for fun. All the men in the villages played! Sometimes hundreds of people played at one time. The match went on all day, and sometimes even for two days.

Today football is very different. There are eleven players on each team. They play for about an hour and a half. They take a break in the middle of the game.

Lesson 10

The Earth Is Our Home

Dialog 1

A: What a nice park!

B: Yes, it really is.

A: Look at the children. They are playing under the trees.

B: They shouldn't break off the branches.

A: You're right. Trees keep the air fresh.

B: Right. Trees are very important to our life.

My friends and I went to the park near our school. We went there to take part in the clean-up campaign. We collected a lot of trash. We were surprised that there was so much trash.

People say that the earth is our home. I asked myself, "Is it a nice home?" I also asked myself, "Are we treating the earth well?" I don't think that it is a nice home. And I don't think that we are treating it well. We must treat the earth well. Then, it will be a nice home.

A lot of thick smoke and bad gas are coming from factories and cars. These things make the air dirty. Then, dirty air makes us sick.

Also, a lot of dirty water is coming from factories and houses. Where does this dirty water go? It goes into rivers. Of course, fish can't live in dirty rivers. We can't swim in them, either.

I want to breathe fresh air, and swim in clean rivers. I also want to walk through clean and beautiful parks. I really want to live in a nice home.

Where Is the Post Office?

Dialog 1

A: Excuse me. Is there a bookstore nearby?

B: Yes, there is. There's one next to the post office.

A: How far is it from here?

B：It is only two blocks away.

A: How can I get there?

B: Go straight two blocks and turn left. It is on your right.

A: What would you like to do during Christmas vacation?

B: I'd like to visit a historical site in Korea.

A: Sure. It was the capital city of the Shilla Dynasty for a thousand years. You can        see many historical sites there.

B: Sounds very interesting.

   I will ask my parents to take me there.

Tim and Sally went to Gyeongju during Christmas vacation. They enjoyed sightseeing all day long in Gyeongju. They were surprised that there were so many historical sites in one city. Indeed, Gyeongju was a nice place to visit!

Sally and Tim were really impressed with Seokguram and Bulguksa. At Bulguksa, they bought some postcards. They wanted to send them to their friends in New York.

The next day, they went out to find the post office. While they were looking for the post office, they met a college student.

Tim asked him, "Excuse me. Where is the post office?"

"Post office? Keep going on this street and you will get to the railroad station. Turn left and you can't miss it," said he.

"That's very kind of you. Thank you," said Sally.

Soon they found the post office and sent their postcards.

Nari borrowed a book about American history from Tim. She read the following story.

Christopher Columbus lived in Italy. He sailed to many places. He wanted to sail to Asia. In those days, people called Asia "the Indies." They traveled east to get there. They went across land and water. The trip was long and very dangerous. Columbus had a different idea. He wanted to sail west! Many people said, "That's crazy. The earth is flat. You'll sail off the edge of the world. You'll never come back." Columbus didn't listen. He was sure that the world was round.

The King and Queen of Spain gave Columbus money and three ships. In 1492, Columbus sailed west. After a month at sea, the sailors wanted to turn back. Columbus didn't listen to them. "Sail on," he said. After two months, Columbus saw land.

Columbus thought he was on an island in the Indies. He called the people there "Indians." He thought, "I discovered a new route to Asia." But he discovered something much more important. It was a new world to the Europeans.
