Lesson 1
Mr. Baker Likes Korea

Let's Talk
Dialog 1

Hi, Cathy. What's up?
My grandmother sent me a postcard. Do you remember her visit here?
Of course, I do. How is she doing?
She is doing just fine. Oh, she asked me to say hello to you.
That's very nice of her. I hope she enjoyed her visit.
She said she enjoyed her stay here very much. She is looking forward to her second visit to Korea.

Dialog 2

A : What do you think of Mr. Baker?
B : He seems very nice.
A : Why do you think so?
B : Because he always tries to learn Korean customs.
Do you remember his first day at school?
A : I sure do. He took off his shoes before entering the classroom.
B : Right. He thought he should take off his shoes even in the classroom.
A : He always says, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."

Let's Read

Mr. Baker is the new English teacher for Yumi's class. He is now introducing himself to Yumi and her classmates.
"Hello, everyone. Nice to meet you. I'm your new English teacher. My name is Richard Baker."
"I came to Korea six months ago. When I first came here, I didn't know much about Korea. But now I can even speak a little Korean, and there are many things that I like about Korea."
"First, I like Korean customs. One nice custom is showing respect to older people. When my students see me, they always bow to me very politely. I like this custom very much. Also I like the idea that Koreans usually live with their grandparents. This is indeed a very good custom."
"Most of all, I like Korean people. I think they are really warm-hearted and friendly to foreigners. Once I visited a Korean family. Guess what! I entered the living room with my shoes on! That is the custom in my country. Of course, everyone was embarrassed. But no one said anything about it. Later, I found people took off their shoes before they entered the living room. I was really embarrassed."
