Let's Talk
Dialog 1
I think Martin Luther King was a great man.
Why do you think so?
Because he did his best to improve human rights.
I think Heo Jun was the greatest. He took care of all kinds of sick people.
How about you, Cathy?
To me, Abraham Lincoln was the greatest. He gave freedom to the slaves.
I think those people had something in common. They all made every effort to help others.
Dialog 2
A : You are very good at math and science.
You will become a good scientist, I think.
B : Well, I want to be a musician.
A : I didn't know that.
B : Playing and listening to music is a lot of fun.
A : But, you like science, don't you?
B : Of course, I do. But there is nothing I like more than music.
A : That's surprising.
B : What do you want to be when you grow up?
A : I want to be a zoologist.
I'd like to protect endangered animals.
Let's Read
Cathy loved Marian Anderson, and sent Yumi the following story by e-mail.
In 1939, Marian Anderson, one of the greatest singers of the time, was not allowed to perform in Constitution Hall, Washington, DC. She was refused because she was black.
When Anderson was a child, her family was poor. But all her family members enjoyed music. She joined her church choir as a young girl. She surprised church members with her beautiful voice. Church members collected nickels and dimes for her singing lessons.
Anderson soon won a contest over 300 other singers. But she was black. People would say, "Wonderful voice! But it's too bad that she's colored."
She thought she might do better in Europe. She won a fellowship and went to Europe. Then, in 1935, she returned to America. The great conductor, Toscanini, said, "A voice like hers comes once in a century."
Some Americans felt ashamed that they did not allow her to sing in Constitution Hall. So they arranged a concert for her in front of the Lincoln Memorial. A cheering crowd of 75,000, along with millions of radio listeners, were moved by her beautiful singing. Anderson was one of America's greatest singers.
