Lesson 9
Let's Obey Traffic Lights

Let's Talk
Dialog 1

The green light is blinking.
Hurry up. Let's cross the street.
No, don't do that. We won't have time to cross.
Look. It's red now.
We're already late for the movie.
But we must obey the traffic laws.
It's all my fault. I left home too late.
Don't worry. We will be just five minutes late.
Right. Obeying the traffic laws is important.

Dialog 2

A : What happened? You look terrible.
B : I fell down while rollerblading.
A : That's too bad. How did it happen?
B : I tried to get out of the way of a car.
A : Were you on a big street?
B : Yeah. But I am good at rollerblading.
A : You shouldn't do that again.
It's too dangerous to rollerblade on big streets.
B : You are right.
A : And you need to wear a helmet as well.

Let's Read

Minsu, Yumi, and Mike went downtown to see a movie. On their way, they saw a lot of traffic. There were many cars and buses on the street. To their surprise, some cars and buses did not obey the traffic lights. Even some people did not obey them.
"It is very dangerous to walk against the red lights," said Minsu.
"A great many people are killed or hurt in traffic accidents every year. Among these are a large number of children. I was told two-thirds of them are under seven years of age," said Mike.
"That's true. Little children often cross the road without looking both ways," said Yumi.
"What should we do to avoid my sister, Minji, the rules to follow," said Minsu.
"What are they?" asked Yumi.
Minsu replied, "Let me tell you. First, don't play in the streets. Second, never cross the road without looking both ways. Third, be careful when you cross in front of a standing bus or car."
"Well, we must keep those rules in mind," said Mike.
