Lesson 11
The Martians Are Coming!

Let’s Talk 1
Minho: Sally, do you think Mars is larger than Earth?
Sally: Yes, I think so.
Minho: You’re wrong. The Earth is twice as large as Mars.
Sally: Oh, really?

Let’s Talk 2
Mike: Sumi, this is a picture of Mars.
Sumi: Wow, it’s beautiful. By the way, why is it so red?
Mike: Well, it’s because its surface is covered with red dust.
Sumi: I see.

The Martians Are Coming!

On Halloween Eve, October 31, 1938, many Americans were listening to a program of dance music on the CBS Radio Network. Suddenly, the broadcast was interrupted. The announcer read an urgent news bulletin. People had seen brilliant flashes of light coming from Mars.
After the news, the dance music started again. A few minutes later, the announcer cut in once more. He sighed deeply after he reported the latest development. A large metal object had just landed in New Jersey!
Soon the network had a reporter at the scene. In great excitement he told how Martians were pouring out of their spaceship. They were killing hundreds of people with their deadly heat-ray guns.
All at once, the reporter’s voice was cut off. It sounded as though he had been killed by a Martian. Other announcers picked up the story. They described the Martians’ conquest of New Jersey. And they warned that the Martians were advancing on New York City.
Panic spread among the listeners. Some grabbed their belongings, jumped in cars, and started driving away from their homes. Others locked the doors and windows of their houses, and hid in basements. A few brave people went out to fight the Martians. In New Jersey, a group of farmers thought they saw the Martian space-ship. They fired at a strange, dark shape.
By the end of the radio program, everyone realized what had happened. The invasion of the Martians was a made-up story. But more than one million people had believed what they heard. Most of them had taken every word to be true.
The farmers who had fired on the spaceship were the most embarrassed. The morning following the broadcast, they found that they had shot several holes in the town’s water tower!

After the program, in which thousands of people were killed and many cities were destroyed, it was announced that it had been a fictional play written and produced by Orson Welles, the brilliant young actor and director. Orson Welles wrote a radio play based on the book The War of the Worlds, by H. G. Welles and decided to make it seem as real as possible.
Welles’ play was so realistic that many people believed the Martian invasion was really happening. All across America people were panicked. Thousands tried to escape in their cars while others called the police. One old lady was so frightened that she committed suicide. When they found out they had been fooled, people were very angry.
Orson Welles had to apologize in public. He said he had not meant to frighten people, that he was just trying to make his play more interesting.
However, people were easily fooled because they wanted to believe there were intelligent beings on Mars. Some went even further: They were sure that Martians wanted to conquer Earth.
