A News Story

“Tonight,” Mr. Schuman announced, “it is a great honor to welcome the famous opera star, Madame Maria Melonas.” The audience clapped warmly.
“Thank you,” Madame Melonas said. “It is a joy to be here to sing for you, young musicians, in the school where I first studied music. Walking upstairs to this room was like walking into my past, when I was a student here at this music school. And so tonight,” Madame Melonas continued, “I will sing some songs I first learned here.”
In the audience, Linda listened to the beautiful voice that filled the room.
Listening to Madame Melonas, Linda thought how fortunate she was to be a student at the school. She was grateful. And she was proud of her school, which produced this world-famous singer.
Linda really loved everything about the school. That’s why she liked to wander through the school from top to bottom when she was free. She went up and down the stairs from the fourth floor to the basement, and she dreamed of the day when she would become a music teacher.

Madame Melonas’ voice filled the room. Everyone was spellbound. No one moved. Then, suddenly the lights went out! The audience gasped. But Madame Melonas only stopped for a moment. “It is nothing,” she thought. “Just a blown fuse. It will be fixed in a minute.”
So she continued singing in the darkness. The audience, calmed by her voice, listened attentively.
But not Linda. She thought she smelled smoke. It was faint at first. But the smell grew stronger. Suddenly she realized what it was. Fire! The beautiful old school building was on fire!
“Fire!” someone screamed, just at that moment.
“Don’t panic!” cried Mr. Schuman. “Please be calm!”
The room was beginning to fill with smoke. Then someone yelled, “The stairs are on fire! We can’t go out!”
“There must be another way out,” Madame Melonas said, "What about the back staircase?”
“Yes, yes,” cried Mr. Schuman.
“But in the dark, I―I can’t find it. I can’t see anything.”
“Here. Over here,” called Linda.
“Someone take my hand. Let’s all get in a line and hold hands. I’ll lead the way.”
The others followed Linda as she led them through the smoky darkness toward the back staircase.
“Watch out to your left,” Linda said. “There’s an old armchair there.”
“Hurry! Hurry! I can’t breathe!” someone cried. “Don’t hurry,” said Linda.
“Just stay calm.” Linda led the way down the stairs.
“Be careful,” she said.
“There’s a loose stair. It’s the eighth one down.”
“The smoke is getting thicker,” someone shouted.
“How much farther?”
“We’re almost there,” Linda answered.
“Don’t worry. Turn left at the bottom of the stairs. It’s only five or six steps to the basement door.” Then at last, coughing and frightened, they reached outside.
“Thank goodness, we’re safe!” cried Mr. Schuman.

Early the next morning a messenger arrived at Linda’s home.
“Flowers for Ms. Linda Braun.” he announced when Linda’s mother answered the door. “And here’s your morning paper, Ma’am,” he added, picking up the paper from the front door. “Linda!” said Mrs. Braun.
“Someone sent you flowers. I wonder who.”
“What does the card say, Mom?” Linda asked.
“The card says they’re from Madame Melonas,” Mrs. Braun replied.
“Maria Melonas sent me flowers?” Linda was so excited she thought she would burst.
“Why not?” asked her mother. “After all, you’re very famous according to today’s paper.”
