Lesson 9
Fun with Science

Let’s Talk 1
Minju: Tony, could you give me a hand?
Tony: Sure, what can I do for you?
Minju: Can you move this bag to my room?
Tony: OK, no problem.

Let’s Talk 2
Insu: Now, let’s put this hot can in the cold water.
Sally: What do you think will happen?
Insu: Well, something exciting will happen.
Sally: OK, let’s see. The can will shrink.

The following article is from a school newspaper of a middle school in the United States. Read it carefully, and find out what happened.

THE KINGSMEAD SCHOOL TIMES
MARCH 26, 2001
Kingsmead School Students Go Experimental
Last week, Kingsmead School held a Science Fair. The winner was: Michelle Jordan, 14, from Grade 9 for her project ‘Egg Inside a Bottle.’ Kingsmead Times reporter, Jennie Spencer, interviewed the winner.

How did Michelle get the egg inside the milk bottle?

Q: How did you get the egg in the bottle, Michelle?
Michelle: I used a hard-boiled egg. First I shelled it, so it was flexible. Then I put a milk bottle in a bowl of very hot water to warm it. Then I put the egg on the top of the bottle and I quickly put the bottle in very cold water. ‘Shlerruppp!’ the egg went in.

Q: Why did that happen?
Michelle: Air takes up more room―it grows―when it is hot. It takes up less room when it is cold. When the bottle was hot, the air inside took up more room, so some of it went out. Then when I put the bottle in cold water, the air inside the bottle shrank―it took up less room, so it needed more air to fill the bottle. As the egg was covering the top of the bottle, it went in with the air.

Look at the following two experiments and answer the questions.

1. If the girl blows air over the paper, will the paper go up or down?
If the girl blows hard, the paper will go up! Try it and see! Scientists call this the Bernoulli effect after Daniel Bernoulli (1700~1782), the Swiss scientist who discovered it.
Nowadays, the Bernoulli effect helps planes to fly. The wing of a plane is like the paper in the girl’s hand. The top side of the wing is curved like the paper, so the air blows over the wing in the same way and lifts it up.

2. If the boy takes his hand away, will the ruler and the hammer fall?
If the hand is moved away slowly and carefully, the ruler and hammer will not fall!
Think about it. The desk is holding up the ruler and the hammer. On the right is the heavy hammer head. On the left are the light wooden things. If the wooden things go down, they must lift the hammer head up. But they can’t do that because the hammer head is too heavy. So they don’t fall. Try it and see for yourself!
