Early Kites and Traditional Korean Kites
Ⅰ
Kites have a long and interesting history, but we do not know who flew the first kite or where. Probably kites were flown first in Asia, then spread to Europe, North and South America, and finally the rest of the world. In China, kites were made of silk and bamboo a long time ago. Some kite-builders who lived on islands in the Pacific Ocean made their kites out of giant leaves.
Early kites were used for many purposes. In China and Korea, it was the custom to fly kites before the end of a year to take away bad luck. People flew kites and then set them free. They thought kites took away their bad luck.
Kites were also used for sending messages or warning of danger. Sometimes kites were used in real battles, too. Special kites that had noisemakers or lights were flown over enemy camps at night to scare the enemy.
Small, quick kites were used, and are still used, for kite fighting. In a fight, the aim is to bring the other kite down by cutting its string.
Ⅱ
By the traditional Korean kites, we mean gaoriyeon and bangpaeyeon. Gaori means a “ray” which is a flat kind of fish. Bangpae means a shield.
Gaoriyeon has three tails―a long middle tail and two short side tails. It waves these tails high up in the sky. When you see it, your heart is filled with joy. Bangpaeyeon is quick so it is often used for sport fighting. When you see two kites fly up and down quickly in a fight in the sky, you are thrilled. Gaoriyeon and bangpaeyeon are made out of simple materials. Let's learn how to make these kites.
