Lesson 6
Safety in the Home
Let’s Talk 1
Yunju: Today gas is widely used for cooking.
Steve: That’s true. All the homes use gas for cooking.
Yunju: We must be careful when we handle gas.
Steve: Right. We should always be careful.
Let’s Talk 2
Giho: If you smell gas, you should turn off the main gas line.
Sally: Yes. That’s important. Then what should we do?
Giho: We should open the doors and windows.
Sally: Right, but you shouldn’t stay in the house.

Safety in the Home
Thousands of accidents happen in the home every year because of electricity, gas, and fire. You can avoid accidents in your own home if you take care.
1. Electricity Safety
Electricity can cause severe electric shocks and fire. Don’t overload power sockets. Do not twist or bend electrical cords sharply. Do not use the cord to pull a plug out of its socket. Never use any electrical cords that are worn out. Do not run cords under carpets or rugs.
Switch off your television and computer at night. If you use an electric razor in the bathroom, use a special socket. Never dry clothes over an electric heater.
2. Gas Leaks
A gas leak is very dangerous for two main reasons. First, the gas is poisonous and can kill you. Second, it can explode if the gas meets a flame. The first sign of a gas leak is the smell. If you smell gas, turn off the main gas line, open the doors and windows, and call the emergency gas services.
3. Fire
If a fire breaks out in the house, it can spread very quickly. If you see fire or smell smoke, you should warn other people and get to safety. If you see a fire before it spreads, you may be able to put it out. However, if a fire breaks out in your house and it is too late for you to put it out, you should take the following steps:
a. Keep low to avoid smoke.
b. Close the door and leave the house.
c. Warn your neighbors.
d. Call the fire department.
If you wake up to the smell of smoke at night but you do not know where the fire is, crawl to the door and feel it with your hand. If it is hot, do not open it, but shout to warn others. Then, keep low and place material such as a towel at the bottom of the door. Open a window and shout for someone to call the fire department. Wait for help to arrive.
If a fire breaks out in your house and there is no escape route, get to a room far away from the fire. Do not go to a higher floor. If the fire is catching up to you, you may have to drop to the ground. In this case, take the following steps:
a. Never jump out of a high window.
b. Instead, cut sheets or curtains and tie them tightly together to make a rope.
c. Push some heavy furniture to the window, and tie the rope to it.
d. Drop the free end of the rope out of the window and lower yourself to the ground.
If you cannot make a rope, throw some bedding out of the window. Sit on the window sill. Check that the landing area is safe.
Hold the edge of the window sill, turn around so that you are facing the house. Slowly lower yourself but hold the window sill with both hands. When you fall, cover your head with your arms.
