New York! New York!
Ⅰ
New York! What do you know about New York? What’s so special about it? Many people say New York is a city of contrast. It can be beautiful and it can be ugly. It can be friendly and it can be rude. It can be good and it can be bad. But it is never boring.
New York is the city that never sleeps, where life moves faster than anywhere else in the U.S. More than twenty million people visit New York every year. Lots of them say it is the most exciting city in the world.
Ⅱ
New York! New York is the city that offers you the best of everything, whether it is theaters, music or sport.―Many New Yorkers say that you can buy everything you want in New York. Take food for an example. There are 17,000 or more restaurants, cafes, and fast food shops in New York. You could eat out in New York every night for fifty years and never visit the same cafe or restaurant twice! And you can find food from every country in the world.
Ⅲ
If you want to look at the buildings in New York, look up! The city is full of skyscrapers. Many of them are not very beautiful, but some are wonderful, and very modern.
The city is always changing. You can hear the noise of buildings going up or going down all the time. Cars and buses stop and start, and police officers blow whistles at the drivers. WALK and DON’T WALK signs go on and off, and people run across streets and avenues.
? Between 1931 and 1979, it was the highest building in the world. It has 102 floors, is 448 meters high, and you can see 120 kilometers from the top.
? You can see the flags of every nation in the United Nations in front of the building.
? The French people gave this statue to the American people in 1886. You can walk up 354 stairs to get to the top of the statue.
Ⅳ
New York! It was the gateway to freedom for a long time, the port through which millions of immigrants from Europe entered the U.S.A. Four hundred years ago, Manhattan Island was the home of Native Americans. In 1609, a man named Henry Hudson traveled up the river to Manhattan. He was British but he was on a Dutch ship, the Half Moon. Today the river is called the Hudson River.
In 1626, a Dutchman named Peter Minuit came to Manhattan and paid the Indians about twenty-four dollars for the island. Minuit put up some houses, and called the little town New Amsterdam. By 1647, about 500 people lived in New Amsterdam, but in 1664, the British took the town from the Dutch and changed its name to New York.
In 1790, about 33,000 people lived in New York, but then more men and women began to come to America from all over the world. People say New York is a melting pot of many different races. Here are some voices of boys and girls living in New York.
Ⅴ
My name is Maureen Donovan. I’m 15 years old. My brother is 13. My ancestors left Ireland to come to the U.S. in 1846. People in Ireland were very poor in those days. During that time thousands of Irish died.
Hi! I’m Marvin Mitchell. I'm 15 and I live with my dad and mom in Brooklyn. My family has lived in America for over two hundred years―that’s longer than most white or other immigrant families. My ancestors first came from Africa, but they didn’t come willingly. They were brought here by Caucasian Americans.
My name is Yujin Lee. I’m in the ninth grade. It was my grandfather that settled down in New York. He came to the U.S. in 1963 at the age of 29. He started to work at a grocery store. At that time he worked from 5 in the morning 12 p.m. In the seventies, he became the owner of a grocery store. A few years later he started to run a restaurant.
My father teaches math at one State University of New York. I have one elder sister and one younger brother. I am very proud of being Korean-American.
