Lesson 8
Painting and Sculpture
Let’s Talk 1
Minho: Would you like something to drink?
Sally: Yes. I’d like orange juice, please.
Minho: Here you are.
Sally: Thank you. Isn’t that Joan Miro’s painting?
Minho: Yes. I’m sure it’s his “Composition.”
Let’s Talk 2
Insu: To me, this painting seems realistic.
Sally: Maybe so, but it’s an abstract painting.
Insu: But I can clearly see three musicians in it. Do you know what I mean?
Sally: Yes, I do.

Painting and Sculpture
Ⅰ
Art can be real or imaginary, funny or sad, beautiful or ugly. Before photography was invented, most artists tried to show things as they saw them. They painted pictures of nature called landscape and pictures of people called portraits. They painted pictures of flowers in vases, food, and other things. These pictures are called still lifes. When artists paint nature, people, and things as they see in real life, their pictures are called realistic.
1. Landscape, Seascape, and Cityscape
A picture of scenery is called a landscape. A picture of the sea is called a seascape. A picture of city buildings is called a cityscape. Below are landscapes by several famous painters.
2. Portrait and Self-portrait
A picture of a person (or more than one person) is called a portrait. When an artist paints a picture of himself, it is called a self-portrait. Below are a few famous portraits, including a self-portrait.
3. Still Life
A picture of small objects―like flowers, bottles, books, food, and other things―is called a still life. Below are three well-known still-life paintings.
4. Modern Paintings
Many artists still paint landscapes and portraits, but many other artists today create pictures that do not show real objects or persons. They use shapes or colors in interesting ways. Their pictures do not look like anything in the real world. These paintings are called abstract. Abstract paintings are also called modern paintings.
Here are three well-known abstract paintings by famous abstract painters. Sometimes an abstract painting has a name that sounds realistic―like Picasso’s “Three Musicians.”
Ⅱ
Sculpture is a three-dimensional form made from clay, stone, metal, or other materials. Many sculptures stand freely so that you can walk around them. Some hang from the ceiling. Sculptures can be large like the Statue of Liberty, or they can be small. Some sculptures are realistic. They look like a person or an animal in real life. Some modern sculptures are abstract and have no form that we can see in the real world.
