Lesson 8
Cash or Charge?

Let's Talk
Dialog 1

What's your hobby?
Collecting stamps. How about you?
I like collecting coins of other countries. They show the culture of those countries.
Oh, I see. What kinds of coins are there in America?
Six kinds, I think. Pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars, and dollars. Have you seen all of the six kinds?
I don't think so. I don't think I've seen a dollar coin.

Dialog 2

A : Have you enjoyed your dinner, sir?
B : Yes, we have.
A : Thank you, sir. That will be 30,000 won, please.
How would you like to pay, cash or charge?
B : Cash. Here's 30,000 won.
A : Thank you. Here's your receipt. Have a nice evening.
B : What does charge mean?
A : Oh, it means payment by credit card.
Credit card payment is very common nowadays.
B : Then, we don't have to carry a lot of cash, do we?
A : Right. A credit card is just another way of payment.

Let's Read

Yumi wanted to find out about money. She went to the library, and read the following in a book.

Do you know where the English word "cash" came from? Some people believe that it came from an Indian word meaning "compressed tea." People from India used blocks of compressed tea as money. Thus, coins and bills have not been the only form of money. In addition to tea, animals' teeth, shells, and even salt were once used as money.
These days, the word, "cash" means money in the form of coins or notes. Probably, you have heard clerks saying, "Cash or charge?" at stores and restaurants. Do you know what that means? It means, "Are you going to pay with coins and bills or use a credit card?"
Indeed, many people use credit cards. Usually, banks issue them. People make charges with their credit cards, and then the banks pay the merchants. Later, people pay back the banks.
This system is very convenient. One problem is that people tend to overuse credit cards. Foolishly, when they use them, some people think that they buy something for nothing. But they will have a hard time paying for it.
That's why we say, "A fool and his money are soon parted."
